        1) How in the world did this estonian escape being sent back to the Soviet bloc after the war like most of the foreign volunteers did

Harald Nugiseks was sent back to the Soviets after being captured. He spent MANY years in a Russian Gulag after the war. His parents were also deported to Siberia and died there. He never saw them again. He came home and was branded as a Fascist Hero, Criminal, etc. and could not find a job, (no one would hire him). He finally got a job doing contruction work and eventually ended up being the head of the company.

        2) You don't often see a press conference with German Vets, what was that about[/quote]

That was from an Estonian Veterans Meeting. I have been to them before and they still have reunions and a small parade (not sure they do that after being admitted into the EU).

The insignia on his tie is the divisional symbol of the 20th SS Division but was originally taken from the Estonian Freedom Cross from the Estonian War of Independance 1919-20. Both Versions of the 20th SS collar tabs were based on the symbols on this award. The arm with sword and "E" and the other Version with the letter "E" with the sword through it. The actual font or form of the letter "E" in this version is based on the Third Class series of the Freedom Cross.

See the attached picture (note the color photo of the collar tab is a reproduction but good enough to show the influence of the "E" from the Freedom Cross on the collar tab pattern.

        Regards,

        Thomas

Ingsoc, what uniform is your friend wearing? If it is IDF, then it is very cool to see this.

                          Thanks for this discussion everybody.

                                Heinrich Ahrends and I :-)

Here is a nice foto from Feldwebel Heinrich Ahrens, his wife (left) and me (right). Ahrens is holder auf the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold, Ritterkreuz (09.01.1945) and 4 Tank destroyer patches.
In the background you can see Werner Ebeling (with hat). Generalmajor BW a.D. , Holder of the 763. Eichenlaub. The foto was taken in September 1998. One of my vavorite RK Träger fotos! Do you like it, too?????
