Excuse the newbie question as I know nothing about the history of Death Cards, but how many were made for each soldier and how were they distributed? With millions of soldiers being killed from 39-45 how, when and where were the given out? Were cards made until the end of the war?

          Thx

I am definitely not an expert, but from my understanding they were handed out at the Soldier funeral at home. I have owned a couple from 46-48.

Yes, they were given out by the families just as in the US how we hand out bulletins of the deceased at the funerals. It was up to the family as to how many they wanted to have made. The families handed, or mailed, them out to families and friends, most likely at the funerals. Sometimes, multiple different examples were made. The tough ones to find are brother death notices, where it will have two or more from the same family. The most I have seen on one death notice is 3 brothers.

death notices were mainly distributed when the deceased’s family left the church. This practice continued until the 1950s, which is sometimes difficult to date precisely
