High see fleet badge awarded to an "EMDEN" officer

    Good evening,

I recently purchased this nice little group of a Leutnant zur See, composed of an EK2 citation and a high see fleet badge citation.
EK2 is awarded on 10th october 1942 by Dönitz (stamp) and the HSF badge is awarded on 5th january 1943 by konteradmiral Lietzmann.
I made my researches, and I found the following:
    - the sailor joined the KM in 1939 and served on the light cruiser "EMDEN"
    - at an unknown date, he moved on submarines and was 2nd watch officer on U164. After the 1st patrol, and return in Lorient on 7th october 1942, he received the EK2 3 days later thanks to the 2 allied ships sunk during the patrol
    - during the 2nd patrol, U164 is sunk by a PBY Catalina on 6th january 1943 close to Brazil. 2 survivors from the 56 crewmen, my guy didn't made it. The awarding of the HSF badge was the day before, Ramberg didn't know he received it.

So, my question is: for what Ramberg is awarded the HSF badge, at a time he's no more serving on it? I read crew on the "EMDEN" could be awarded the HSF badge from 7th april 1942. Can it be for previous actions?
    Thanks.

    Greg.

Nobody can't help about my question.
It remains to my eyes a nice little group of an officer of the Uboot waffe!

It would of been for previous service. It is quite common to see examples like this.
