    Larry, there are two possibilities:

    1. StuG.Abt.243
    2. tactical number (vehicle number) 243

It remains unknown, til you find another photo from the same group that shows the same or different number!

Unfortunately the number under the tactical sign is not clear enough to make out what it is.

Here is another photo taken at the same site. The vehicles have the same tactical sign and maybe belong to the same unit?

The number under the tactical sign looks like a 4.

    Cheers,
    Larry

      Hi Larry, Hi Akira,

in my opinion it is the Stug.Abt.243.

For a sequence number, which we often see on photographs is the
      number too high.

I would say that the photo was take in the fall of 1941 during the advance on Moscow

The photos may belong to this series

        Thanks Akira & augustdieter.

I believe you are both right. Stug. Abt. 243 it is.

I played around with the photo a bit and am pretty sure that the number under
the tactical sign on the stug is 243.

        Cheers,
        Larry

That would be fine if only the insignia that you've identified as Mountain Troops wasn't the Divisional Insignia of 15 Panzer Division. The soldiers who clearly aren't Mountain Troops are wearing their newly issued desert trousers and puttees, which some men got instead of the desert boots which the man in your first pic is wearing, you can also see the 15 PD insignia between his legs.

The photo is from me, the Wolfsangel is supposedly I. Fliegerkorps and the twin is for Ln.-Abt. 31. I could not find a link between the Henckels' Zwilling mark and Ln.-Abt.31, but maybe the commander's name was Henckels?

                      Did your photo come alone?

There ist a another Foto with a "Wolfsangel" in combination with a "Hedgehog"

Any Idea will be fine and helpfull
