      Rank identification

      Hi Bill,

Thanks for the rank identification. The Hauptmann's name was Fritz Russner. The 'u' has those 2 dots over it. Seems the photo was taken on Crete as there is writing to that efffevt on the back. It was taken on April 12, 1944. Would you say Fritz is an infantryman?

I would say he was an Infantry Officer since he is wearing a IAB. The two "dots" are called umlaut and without using that symbol you would write "ue" and his name would be spelled out as Ruessner. If it states Kreta then he probably was posted there on occupation duty in 1944.

          Fritz Ruessner

          Hi Bill,

Thanks for the spelling tip. I don't have an umlaut key, so using 'ue' instead will come in handy. This is what Gerdan translated from the back of the photo.

          Kreta (??), 12.4.44

Das Bild soll Dich an gemeinsam verlebte Stunden in nettem Kameradenkreis erinnern.
          Dein Fritz Rüssner(?)

I guess he wasn't sure what Kreta meant or the spelling of Fritz' last name, hence the question marks there.

Most folks associate Kreta with the year 1941 which is why I think he placed the questions marks after Kreta ?? 12.4.1944

You will see an umlaut over the A (ae) and O (oe) as well.
