Hello John,
Very nice portrait and thank you for sharing it. The glider pilot trade badge comes in three levels A,B,C and worn on the lower left pocket as shown. Your photo shows a C proficiency badge and these badges were very common. Glider sport and para military training for pilots was in full swing in the 1930's prior to the war and continued even during the war. There was of course a Glider Pilot Badge awarded for Military trained Glider pilots during the war and worn by very few and very Rare - Bill
