Battle of Britain ME-109 Shoot Down Info 31 Aug 1940

I recently acquired this artifact and am trying to gather more info on it. I know these events were fairly well documented during the day, and I would like to dig up the unit and perhaps pilot of this aircraft. The piece was definitely cut from the prop of an aircraft and the detailed info regarding the crash should help a lot

I'm pretty sure this is a Bf 109 E-1 of 1./JG 77 flown by an Unteroffizier Keck who bailed out and was captured unhurt. The aircraft was on escort duty for bombers attacking Hornchurch airfield and was returning when attacked by Hurricanes from 501 Sqdn

Thanks, I thought it was a pretty remarkable artifact. Given the unique shape, it definitely came from a prop and the scrapes and gouges show the force of impact.

interesting! As a metal detectorist I was on several plane crash sites, even of 262 and found many bits and pieces there but never had an idea to take some and even stamp them.
