    Kaplt. (Ing.) Werner Wierig

    Hello to all,
I know that this is a long shot, but does anyone have any information on Kapitänleutnant (Ing.) Werner Wierig? He was on board Z-9 "Wolfgang Zenker" when it was scuttled off Narvik, on 13 April, 1940, after running out of ammo and fuel. In 1944 he was Korvettenkapitän (Ing.) and Fleet Engineer of the 8. Destroyer Flotilla. A friend of mine has two of his award documents; one for the EKI, and the other for the Narvikshield. He also has a small portrait photo. In the photo, he is wearing the Narvikshield, the EKI, the Destroyer Badge, a Spanish type Wound Badge, and what looks like a DRL Sports Badge. (Only a small portion of what is believed to be the Sport Badge is visible though.) It looks like he is wearing an EkII ribbon at the buttonhole, and there is a small portion visible of what is definitely a Spanish Cross w/Swords. We are looking for any assistance as far as the decorations held by Werner Wierig. Particularly, the grade of the Wound Badge, the Sport Badge, and the grade of the Spanish Cross. Also, any information on other decorations held, that are not already listed in this thread.
Thank you for any and all assistance.
    Best regards! Tom

What does it say on the EKI doc?

All i can say is that he didn't get the DK or higher and that he made Korvettenkapitäne on 1.4.43

      Hello Simon,

The EKI document has him as Kaptlt. (Ing.) Wierig from the Destroyer "Wolfgang Zenker". It was issued at Wilhelmshaven on 16. July 1940. The document is signed by Lütjens as Vizeadmiral and Fleet Chief. Ink stamp is 'Kriegsmarine Flottenkommando'.

OK, so that means he got the EKI for actions at Narvik. The EKII therefore was either for the same or for earlier operations such as minelaying off the Eastern English coast or during the invasion of Poland.

I can add a little more. His last post of the war "10.1944-Bis Ende Maureb. Narvik, Abteilungs Leiter" as mentioned by Diesel was the Marineausrüstungs und Reparaturbetrieb Narvik (Bogen). Bogen was one of the major fleet anchorages established by the KM in Norway and located further along the fjord from Narvik.
