    hello People,
    I am trying to track down Generalleutnant Helmuth Pfeifer,65 Infanterie Div. 547th Oakleaves winner, served and died in Italy I believe. Can anyone give me more info please?

    Hello Andy.
    The following information is based on Peter Stockert 4 vol. reference book on Oakleaves recipients.
    Gen H. Pfeiffer was born on 18.Feb.1894 in Altenburg/Thuringia. He entered military service on 16.Mar.1912 as Ensign with I.R. 83. Promoted to Leutnant in Aug.1913 he spent the WW I years in I.R.164, toward the end as company commander. He was discharged from the army in 1922 but reentered as Hauptmann as of 1. Jul.1934. Assigned as of 1937 in OKW he was given command of II./I.R.185 in 87.I.D.. Promoted to Oberstleutnant on 1.Dec.1939 he participated in the campaign against France. This division reached the center of Paris as the first German unit (14.Jun.1940). As of 5.Jul.1940 commander of I.R.185 the division was transferred to East Prussia Mar./Apr. 1941 and promoted to Oberst on 1.Oct.1941. Knights Cross on 26.Nov.1941. German Cross i.Gold on 31.Oct.1942, he was severely wounded on 18.Nov.1942. Participated in a training course for division command, he was promoted to Gen.Maj. on 1.Sep.1943 and assumed command of 65.I.D. in Italy. He distinguished himself in the battles south-east of Rome and in the retreat in July/August 1944 towards the Arno River. Promoted to Gen.Lt. on 1.Jun.1944 he was awarded the Oakleaves on 5.Sep.1944 as the 574. recipient. He and his division were also mentioned in the daily Wehrmachts bulletin.
    On 22.Apr. 1945 he died in action near Finale (north of Bologna).
