this is a disciplinary Bat., first sent to Afrika, once they lost it they went to Greece and East front against partisans, doing the dirty job with lighter conscience.

      Hello !

Are you just interested into those 999 units or also other Festungs units ?

As H.W.Plainview mentioned, these 999 numbered units were of a very special type. Some additional info :
      http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/...Gliederung.htm

But there was also great variety of other units, with designation "Festungs- ...".
Their organistion and tasks could be somehow different, depending on the timeframe and exact designation.

      Best regards,

      Archi

FIB 999 is a bad example as it was pretty much unique.

Festungs Infanterie Bataillone were basically weak infantry battalions, more poorly equipped, less transport and often lower quality soldiers (ie. older, health problems etc.).

You might say they were raised as a means of doing more with less.

If you're interested in going in to detail i can post some examples of equipment and organisation from here in Norway as we had a lot of them.

                Here are some examples.

The 5 battalions of the 210 ID made up the divisions entire infantry strength, as you can see, pretty uniform set up across all of them, they were deployed over a very large area of North Norway under the XIX Gebirgs Korps, their duties including costal defence, defence of critical points like bridges, power stations etc, anti-partisan sweeps. Elements of the division saw combat against the Soviets in Oct 44.

FIB 649 and 1014 sat out the war in an area between Bodø and Narvik.

                    Hello !

Very interesting files shown by Simon !

Here are two variants, of which many Festunsg type units were formed from September 1944 onward :
                    ~ 70 Festungs-Infantrie Batallions
                    ~ 100 Fest.-MG Batallions

Those were intended to man the Westwall or the fortifications in the East, but often enough just
                    fought as regular infantry.

Those 3 variants should cover the majority of these type of units.

                    Best regards,

                    Archi
