    24th Panzer Div.

Can anyone tell me where this division was in 1943.

    Thanks

The division fought on the Eastern Front from June 1942 to January 1943, when it was destroyed in the battle of Stalingrad. Reformed it once more returned to the Eastern Front in late 1943 and remained there until surrender to Soviet forces in May 1945.

I just picked up a soldbuch to a guy in this division his dates stop the previous month so Its safe to sag he was killed at Stalingrad.

You can check the Volksbund site to see if he is listed as KIA/MIA or post his name and date of birth here and I am sure someone will check for you.
It could also be possible that he survived and was re-issued a new Soldbuch for any number of reasons.

            Hi New Collector,

Would you mind sharing some photo's? Would be very interested in seeing it!
What was his unit and when was the Soldbuch opened?

Buy a copy of Death of the Leaping Horseman - it covers 24.Pz at Stalingrad. Available at Amazon.

Virtually 100%. Those not killed were captured. I say "virtually" because some wounded were flown out of the pocket and some lucky (very) few were on leave when the pocket closed or even had special leave approved to fly out of the pocket. There's also the odd service and support soldier who was in the far rear areas on some errand or such and luckily ended up outside the pocket, but the division was effectively destroyed as a unit.

Whilst the division as a formation was destroyed, the number of men from the division that survived beyond Stalingrad will have numbered in the thousands exactly for the reasons you state, but rather more than one might think. This was the same for the other formations and is a reason why the army had to establish a special staff, along with the units lost around the same time in Africa, to administer all the 'stray' soldiers who no longer had a unit. These men also formed the nucleus of the revived units later in 43.
