Normandy KC winner // SS-Grenadier Erich Göstl (LSSAH)

    Gentlemen --

Does anyone happen to know whether the KC recommendation to the above
mentioned KC winner exists/survived the war?

I'd be most interested in obtaining a copy and would gladly pay for it of course.

    Thanks and rgds,

    Markus

Yes, my dear friend "Sepp45" wants to check.

Göstl's act of bravery was quite amazing/unique and he's one of only two Waffen-SS recipients of the Knight's Cross at the lowest rank of "Grenadier."

His tale has been told quite a few times, but it would be thrilling to read the official recommendation to learn more facts and details of his actions.

Within his estate there is a great, somewhat sensitive and non-propagandistic newspaper article about him. It describes his time in Vienna end of 1944,
now blind in both eyes, living with his mother, his dreams and emotional state. Interesting, sad, story.

      Cheers,
      Markus

          Here's a quick summary:

          https://en.everybodywiki.com/Erich_G%C3%B6stl

Göstl's regimental commander SS-Standartenführer and Oakleaves winner Albert Frey personally traveled to Prague to award him with the Knight's Cross in a special award ceremony held at the School for the War Blind at Cezyin Palace (Prague Castle). Surrounded by other blind comrades, Frey fixed the Ritterkreuz to Göstl's neck. Afterwards, due to Frey's wife's connections, a party was held with famous German movie stars who were filming a movie in Prague.

Weeks later, Göstl's old buddy Elmer Bonn traveled to Prague to hand deliver the preliminary award document for the KC which was framed at a store near Old Town's square.

Before the Knight's Cross, he was already awarded with the EK2 and EK1 early on during the Normany campaign (as an SS-Grenadier!).

He additionally wore the Wound Badge in Gold (awarded Nov. 15, 1944) and the Sports Badge for the disabled.

Hitler and Göbels had mercy on his situation and did not make him a propaganda "hero," but instead let him live his life and study law at the School for the War Blind in Prague.

Göstl obtained his doctor's degree in law (blind!) and practized his trade in Vienna for many decades before retiring.

          Best,
          Markus

You don't "WIN" a KC, you EARN it. There's no second or third place. I hear it alot from non-serving members, soldiers earn an award, they don't win something in battle. You win something at the Olympics or at football.

                Hi !

I'm sorry I did "serve" and with an elite rapid response force, the same as my father and my grandfather (EK1).

With your knowledge on the LAH/HJ, I would have wished for a valuable contribution. Instead I got a lecture on English grammar. Disappointing of you.

                Cheers,
                Markus

Not sure if you read German, but have you seen this?

From the 2006 printed book by Thomas Kuehne

Kuehne has copies of the original Knight's cross recommendation by Göstl's unit commander.

This is nothing personal nor a lecture, only after stuff that occurred in battle and what comrades earned. I don't think "win" justifies what they have done. This is not personal, maybe a more general remark, but just hope that many would use the phrase "earn" than "win", many friends gave their lives. They didn't win anything. Had hoped you wouldn't take it personal ... I sadly cannot add anything to your question itself on Göstl, interesting story none the less. If I had anything to add, I certainly would have told.

No, I was not aware of this book and greatly appreciate the help !
