I am working about the history of Aufklärungs-Abteilung 221 during the war in Poland in September 1939. Can any one tell who was commander of the unit at that time?

Maybe someone have any infos about fights of 221 Infrantry Division in Poland on 9-10 September 1939 near Uniejów - last hours before the beginning of the battle of the Bzura.

    Any help is warm welcome.

    221 Infanterie-Division 1939

Hello fantomasz ; my two cents..........................

    Uniejowa and Poddębic 1939.

    Just in case.

In the face of the threat on Polish offensive activities from the German 221 Infantry Division coming from Uniejów and Poddębice, in order to stop it. The regiment (9 Pułk Ułanów Małopolskich) was moved on September 11, to the north in the area of Woznik, Idzikowice and the village Nasale.

Nasale-Idzikowice. The area to which the 9 PUł was shifted from the position in the forest to the east of Poddębice, where he stood without contact with the enemy. From here the regiment was to advance towards the Ner river from the left wing to support the attack of 7 bs (Rifle Btl) from the village of Wierzbówka to Biała Góra, ocupied by IR 375 of 221.ID. Before attack, the unit sent its 2 squadron under rtm. Andrzej Bielecki, to carry out a reconnaissance patrol of the Ner. He met enemy patrols crossing the river, which were part of the approaching battalion of German infantry. Captured prisoners testified that they were from the IR 350.

On September 12 with the support of the 3rd Battery 6 DAK, the 9 PUŁ. hit the IR 350 which on that day crossed the Ner expanding the bridgehead on its right bank. The frontal attack was carried out by the 2nd and 4th squadron under the command of Maj. Stanisław Tomaszewski and with the support of 2 platoons of machine guns. The Germany did not give way. More and more new German infantry rushed to counterattacks. Mowed with machine guns and fire from the cannons, they did not give in.

Ujazd. In order to break the opponent's resistance, the commander of the regiment, Lt. Col. Rudnicki ordered his 3 squadron rtm. Ksyka, strengthened with a MG platoon to carry out a flank attack in the direction of Ujazd. When the squadron rushed to the village just entered the place also German infantry in company strength. Determined Polish cavalry attack under the cover of a fire rejected the opponent.

Before evening of September 12, Gen. Kutrzeba arrived at the Regiment and ordered to stop the fight, break away from the opponent and leave by Sierpow to Błonia. The regiment was there first to cover the crossing of the Bzura by the retreating divisions of the Poznań Army and then march to Warsaw.

    About the IR 375.

".. On our advance, the comrades Kürzel, Drutschmann, Wunderlich and Laschinski from the SMG platoon (1.Komp. I.R. 375) were fatally hit by sniper fire, while Comrade Leopold was wounded. This happened at Biala-Cora (Biala Góra) early at 9 o'clock ... "
