Fp # on gasmask- pz & gren.

(SEE FOTO HERE OF 23356 E LABEL)

this is from 'google translate' off of a great german database:

    User: Post Office | Use as: Aufgabestempel, Tagesstempel 2.1.1940-27.4.1940 1st Company Panzerabwehr-Abteilung 294. 28.4.1940-14.9.1940 1st Company Panzerjäger-Abteilung 294. 10.2.1943-23.8.1943 2nd Company schw. Army Tank Fighter Division A, 2.10.1943 not used, 1.11.1944 Staff II and 5.-8. Company Grenadier Regiment 456...
    Use: 2.1.1940 to 21.5.1945

    anyone know about:

    -these units or
-why the 'E' on the number
-the grenadier who carried this mask? hard to make out the name - looks sort of suetterlin-ish gerdan?

the mask and canister are almost black. filter is FE 41 with other markings, extra-lens lid is '(maker initials) 44'. many thanks!

      Hello !

      The FPN refers to :
      (6.4.1944-9.11.1944) 1.11.1944 Stab II u. 5.-8. Kompanie Grenadier-Regiment 456

This can be said for sure, as the E stand for the 8th company. (A=Btl.-Stab/HQ, B=5th, etc.).
The other units mentioned are individual companies, for which the letter E would make no sense.

This regiment was part of 256. Inf.Div. :
      http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/...onen/256ID.htm

      I think, his name was : Rud.[olf ?] Kunz
And this gasmask was in use after Nov. 1944, as that was the date, when the FPN was issued to this unit.

I have no idea for the 428, but I do not hink that it is for a Rgt.

      Best regards,

      Archi

428 on the snout of the mask is likely to be the owners personal Stammrollnummer.

makes perfect sense, simon - so many masks have the 3-digit number in just that place. thanks a lot
