    Location of funeral puzzle

    Hi all,

I bought this photo of what looks like a very impressive burial service and was hoping I'd be able to find a location based on the names on the crosses.

Unfortunately the information visible is sparse but tantalising. Volksbund didn't reveal much.

Anyone got any suggestions as to who would get a whole military band and firing party at their funeral? Also I've scanned the names and enlarged as best I can. Would love to get a location for the graves.

    Thanks in advance,

    Dave

    Cross at left:

    Cross at right:

    Thanks,

    Dave

Many thanks for that Gran Sasso. I would never have guessed the Z as the first letter. Seems the graveyard in the photo was cleared of remains in the '90s and concentrated near St. Petersburg.

Otto Zschenker went missing "4 km nördl. Ssmerdynja" so the location must be near there. Anyone know the proper Russian version of that location?

      Thanks again,

      Dave

Just an addition. I found a soldier named on a German memory in

Wallhöfen, Gemeinde Vollersode, Landkreis Osterholz, Niedersachsen

He was also killed near Ssmerdynia, Russia. I did not find im in the Volksbund list.

I had scanned those at 600DPI but didn't think they'd be readable. I hope I'm wrong! Here they are:

Interesting find Gerdan. I'm wondering if Ssmerdynia, Russland is now Smerdyna in Poland...?

Both first names are "Alfred" - the right one is "Alfred Lange":
