Rick can correct me here, but the only ribbons you usally see worn off the button hole are the WW1 EK, WW2 EK, WW2 Russian Campaign medal and the War Merit Cross (WW2).

I still think it is this - EK 2 WW1

if that's right, Kiwi, it's prob a War Merit Cross, then...after
all the only difference is the outer red band, instead of
black. Very difficult to discern from the inner "shade of
black."
