question on place : Ael Gazala

    Hello,

Im currently researching one of my Flugbucher and i came across the following place in Africa : Ael Gazala

Can anyone point out where exactly can it be found ? , for you info the place was flewn on from Italy ( Lecce ) with a Go 242 ( yes indeed a Glider plane ) on 05.07.1942

    Any help is greatly appreciated

    Cordial greetings,

    Hello,

There is a place simply listed as GAZALA about 100 miles west of the Libyian-Egyptian border, near Tobruk. It was closed to a military airfield complex known as the MARTUBA airfields. Given the date, it was in Axis hands - and would stay so until the El Alamein offensive in October '42 when the German-Italian forces were forced to retreat well west.

Given it's proximity to the frontlines at the time of the flight, it would have been an obvious spot to bring reinforcements.

Sorry I didn't get a chance to call in Brussels!

Gazala would also be al-Gazala. The "al-" means "the" in Arabic. Ael is probably a misspelling.
