Schützen Regiment 110 / 110 (Gespensterbrigade Angern)

Gentlemen,

Since I have two badges of the so called 'Gespensterbrigade Angern' which are connected to the 'Schützen Regiment 110 and 111', I was wondering what exactly a Schützen Regiment is.

I understood that the early Wehrmacht Panzerdivisionen contained one Schützenbrigade, which contained two Schützenregimenter. These were, together with the Kradschützen-Bataillon the so called 'Schnelle Truppen'. I also understand that a Regiment could contain 2000 to 6000 men.

Where these soldiers in a Schützen Regiment (connected to a Panzerdivision) just regular infantry/foot soldiers? Would they wear the normal Feldgrau tunic? If so, which Waffenfarbe/shoulderboards did they wear?

Hope you guys can give me some more information so that I can correctly understand what a Schützen Regiment, in this case '110 & 111 Angern' looked like.

I knew a fine fellow who was in S.R. 110 from 1941 to the end of the war which for him was in Czechoslovakia. He told me that he was usually an infantryman but was trained as a Panzer soldier and sometimes was in a tank, P 4's I think. When in a tank he did say he worn the black uniform. His greatest memories of the war were being constantly cold in Russia and often hungry as their supply situation was apparently constantly very poor. At the end of the war he said his uniform was so shabby he didn't even have tunic. In CZ they were together with a Luftwaffe unit and he obtained a LW camo jacket to wear and from an army medic he got a pair of Unteroffizier shoulder straps (private purchase type) to show his rank. He still had his awards and documents, the blue-piped Uffz. shoulder straps and a SR 110 pin. I never asked about which Waffenfarbe he wore on field gray uniforms and can only guess it was either green or pink. When G.W. Schrodek came out with his book "Die 11.Pz. Div." in 1984 I told his daughter whom I knew well and she got a copy of it for him for Christmas and he was extremely happy to receive it as he had no contact with other veterans after the war. He died by 1990.

Thank you very much for the interesting story! Gives me a bit of an idea, what the war was like for some of the soldiers from this unit. So he also had this 'Gespensterbrigade Angern' pin? Do you know if he wore it on his military tunic during the war?

The two Schützen Regiment that you are interested in were the motorised infantry component of 11 PD, the soldiers might have worn either the light green Waffenfarbe of the panzegrenadiers or the white of the infantry from which they were formed, it would really depend upon the date. As for what they looked like once again that depends upon the date. This link will give you some idea.

At the time I thought the Gesp. Angern pin must be a veteran's group pin as it had no swastika on it and I wasn't familiar with what it was. Afterwards I never thought to ask about it. I have several photos from him and saw others but never saw the pin being worn. Sorry I can't help.

The waffenfarben for early schutzen regiments for low numbered panzer divisions was either rosa or cavalry yellow. After 1940 they transitioned to grass green when they became panzergrenadiers. To my kowledge, schutzen regiments never officially wore white, although some schutzen regiments started off the war as infantry regiments. What makes this really confusing is that there was an IR110 at the same time there was a SR110.

The motorized infantry divisions stared off the war with white waffenfarben and then went to grass green when they became panzergrenadier divisions in late 1942.
