    5.Gren.Regt.45

Finally I have three more wound badge awards (Black, Silver and Gold) for Obergefreiter Eugen Conzelmann of 5.Gren.Regt.45 who was wounded on 22-8-1941, 14-4-1944, 1-8-44 and 12-1-45.
The black document is dated 18-5-44 and appears to be stamped with ?? abt. 532(R). The silver is dated 24-8-44 and is from lazarett 'Deutsch Krone' and the gold (only 4 wounds, so ending up with one serious one) is dated 27-1-45 at Reserve-Lazarett II Gera.
Gera is just south of Leipzig, maybe from battles in Czechoslovakia?
Once again, any information that you may be able to supply would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

    Neil

From Wikipedia, if the 5.Gren.Reg.45 was part of the 45 Volksgrenadier division, then:

'It suffered heavy casualties attacking in the battle for Kursk. Rebuilt but virtually destroyed at Bobruisk during operation Bagration. Rebuilt as 45th Volksgrenadier division in the autumn of 1944 in Poland. Fought at Warsaw and Radom in 1945, retreating through Silesia to Koniggratz, Czechoslovakia where it surrendered.'

Koniggratz seems to be a long way from Gera. Can anyone offer any helpful advice?

      And from Lexicon-dear-Wehrmacht:
'....on 15 October 1942 by the renaming of Infantry Regiment 45 (as part of the) 21 Infantry Division.'
So which division was the 5.Gren.Reg.45 in during January 1945 when both divisions (21 & 45) were fighting much further east than Gera?

Gera had a large hospital for long term care etc. The date for the award could be weeks (even months) after the actual wounding. The soldiers were sent through a system of different hospitals and care facilities depending on the severity of the wounding and then to a hospital like the one in Gera to convalesce and recuperate. The wound badges often were awarded by medical staff in formations etc. with the patients while they were recovering. The Soldbuch would tell you when he was actually wounded, as you noted (gold) it was probably serious so he was sent back to Germany.

Thanks Johnny, I didn't know that Gera was a hospital for 'long term care'. Unfortunately, I don't have his Soldbuch, just his VWA certificates. Conzelmann was wounded in August '44 and the lazarette that gave out his Silver certificate was Deutsch Krone (Walcz in Poland). This is a long way from Gera, I guess that it could be that he went through Deutsch Krone with one wound that had complications which eventually warranted a Gold which was awarded at Gera?

He probably received the silver upon or close to his discharge from Deutsche Krone and then went back to the line only to be hit again etc. and sent to another hospital (Gera).

Gera had a large hospital- Reserve Lazarett Gera, each Wehrkreis had several- The one in Gera was used during both wars.

Not sure if you speak German but you can look at the pictures.
