    46th Panzergrenadier Division

I had a veteran sign his name, and unit on a piece of paper for future reference a few years back. I am trying to find some information on the 46th Panzergrenadier Division but am finding nothing. Does anyone have any leads? He states he served in Normandy, Holland and was captured after being wounded in the Ardennes offensive. Thanks in advance, Chris

Are you sure you have the right unit number/type.

As far as I can tell, there was no 46th Panzer Grenadier or Panzer Division.

46th Infantry Division was stationed in Russia throughout its career.

46th Infantry Regiment (note not PG/Motorised) was in 30th Infantry Division (and spent most of the war in Russia).

The only Panzer Grenadier Divisions in France (at around the time of or before D-Day) were 164 PG Div (which was reforming in Brittany during late '43) and 386 PG Div, which was stationed in the south of France in March '43, and was incorporated into the reforming 3rd PG Div, and transferred to Italy in June '44.

I hate contradicting those who were there, but it looks like someone, somewhere has made an error.

    Sorry.
    Regards
    Steve

As I stated at the beginning, this is as far as I can tell, and reserve the right to be totally wrong

To the best of my knowledge, and with only a breif search in my reaserch sources, as I have an appointment this morning, there was no 164 or 386 Panzer Grenadier Divisions, on the German Order of Battle. The 3rd PGD was fighting in Italy from June 1943 to Aug 1944, moved to France and fought there fromAug 1944 to Nov 1944, It foughht SE of Paris before reatreating to the Saar region. It refitted in Germany Nov-Dec !944 and fought in the Adrennes in that offensive. It was destroyed in the Ruhr pocket Apr 1945.

How about the Luftwaffe? Jäger Rgt.46 (L) of the 16 Feld.Div. It served in the Netherlands, Normandy and it's remaining men were incorporated into the 21 Pz.Div. before being destroyed at Falaise. The remnants then used to rebuild the division which then fought in operation Nordwind on the western front. That would explain why he remembers being a 'panzer grenadier'.

That would be more like it, the 386Div (Mot) was redesignated 3 PGD in Mar 1943
