    Mystery KIA U-boat officer

    Hello

I've got a curious framed portrait of a KM officer with I think just enough information to put a family name and U-Boat number with his face:

The photo shows a line officer wearing the U-boat badge and EKI ribbon (a section of the original ribbon is in the lower left corner under the glass) and the reverse has a small note taped to it which reads "Mein Bruder Hans Jurgen, geb 1915 (29.10.) gest. 1942 (u boot).

So with a first name, a date of birth and a year of death on a U-boat, who can give a full name and boat number to solve this mystery?

    ready set .... go!

Well theres no one with that date of birth and forename on the U-Boat crew listings....however that is not complete!
To search the German War Graves commission you need at least three letters of his surname......

    86 U-Boats were missing in 1942.

Sorry can not help with much more!

Are you happy that it is completely genuine as these are faked quite often...an original photo, write something on the back and stick it in an old frame!! I know a few people that have been caught out with these.

Hi Ian thanks for the reply! No particular reason to doubt it, as neither the KIA status nor the note on the reverse were mentioned in the description when I bought it. The frame hasn't been meddled with, and its a real photo inside. Here's a picture of the back.

        Hello CollectRussia,

Probably a very long-shot but there was a Hans-Jurgen Oldorp, commander of U-90 which was lost in 1942. Visit www.uboat.net/boats/u90.htm Like I said, a
        very long-shot.

Just found a picture of Oldorp. Don't think it is the same guy as in CollectRussia's photo.

There are some definate matches on features but I'm not 100% certain it's the same guy...ears, mouth and chin look the same at least!
