Bataillon Gensicke

Hello,

I have EK2 award document for unit "Bataillon Gensicke".

I have not been able to found anyhting about it. It was for sure some very late war unit put togehter in need, but where did it fight and who was the Gensicke?

I have found one Gensicke from Army honor roll clasp roll: Gensicke, Otto, 27.11.1943, Oberleutnant d.R., Stu.Gesch.Battr. 393

That must the Gensicke, however...

Hptm.Otto Gensicke was commander of Btl II 24.04.1945-08.05.1945 - document is dated already 12.4. (?) (?) Would the unit be named Btl Gensicke already at April 12th... or was the document delivered later and Gensicke's name used (?)

Whose signature (General leutnant) is on the document?

His rank of Stabswachtmeister indicates he was a member of an artillery, Sturmgeschütz or cavalry unit.

Otto Gensicke was with the Sturmgeschutz battery when he received his honor clasp, so that sounds plausible.

And the signature is definetly Meisel. Attached pic I found from my archives - that doc has been in some internet auction while ago.

Bataillon Gensicke

Bataillon Gensicke had been in existence as early as 15 August 1944, when it was mentioned as being an element of Sperrverband z.b.V. "Juergen," attached to the XXIII. Armee-Korps northwest of Brest-Litovsk. Fighting alongside is was SS-Jaeger Bataillon 501 and Sturm-Bataillon AOK 2 near the town of Sielec.

I believe before 1945 Gensicke was with a Stu. Gesch. Brig./Abt. unit but by Spring of 1945 his unit was designated a BTL because they became foot soldiers without their mobile assault gun mechanized equipment. Not saying that a panzerfaust can't knock out a tank too.

It is also interesting to see that Generalleutnant Ernst Maisel, deputy of the Heeres-Personalamt (HPA) was the one with the time to sign award documents. Still, his connection with GFM Rommel is a little dark
