Hi all , this isn't my profile. It's my friends, my real one is currently being activated. But I just wanted to talk to you all about my great-grandfather. He was called 'Josef Bernatowicz' and was born in Dobrovlany, Austro-Hungarian Empire, in 1904/5/6. He fought during the war, but he never spoke of it. I believe that he either fought as a Wehrmacht soldier or a Galizien SS soldier.
He passed away in the 1960s. He was Ukrainian.
Surprisingly, in 1946, he and his family barely escaped the wrath of the commies by migrating to Poland. This was because he 'disposed' of the army records and applied for Polish identity so that he could re-settle in Western Poland. And he did so, luckily. My great uncle, however, wasn't as lucky. When my grandfather and his brother were playing games outside in 1946, 2 or 3 commie soldiers approached them, asked for their names and then started to shoot at them. My great uncle got hit in his foot and couldn't walk properly ever since. My grandfather got a lucky escape.
Anyway. This was just a little tale about my great-grandfather. I am still researching him, and look for photos of him in-service. If any of you know where I could find pics of him, that'd be greatly appreciated.
