    17th Cavalry Regiment

    Gentlemen,

I am trying to identify an officer of the Reichsheer 17th Cavalry Regiment (Bav) with the initials of "MK." If anyone has a Dienstalterliste from this period I would appreciate any information on any officer with these initials. I would also like to know what unit this cavalry regiment became during WWII.

    Thanks for looking, George

      Sebastian,

Thank you for the link. The Ltn looked very dashing in his Reichsheer uniform and even better with the DK after his award. It seems that the 17th was in action from the first to the last of the war. Now, if I could only identify "MK"...

        George,

It looks to me like the regiment was dissolved into a bunch of units upon the mobilization of the German Army.

Looks like these units are the recipients:

        1) Reiter- und Radfahr-Schwadron die Aufklärungs- Abteilung 10 (10th Infanterie Division)
        2) Reiter-Schwadron die Aufklärungs-Abteilung 7 (7th Infanterie Division)
        3) Aufklärungs-Abteilung 27 (27th Infanterie Division and 17th Panzer Division as of 10.10.1940)
        4) Aufklärungs-Abteilung 54 (1st Gebirgs Division)

All of these units were in Wehrkreis VII except for Aufklärungs-Abteilung 10, which was in Wehrkreis XIII.

It would be interesting to know which unit he ended up with, but I can't help you identify the officer, or tell you what unit he served in.

        Hope this helps though,

        Chris

          Chris,

Thanks for the information. I thought that most of the cavalry units became motorized infantry or armored so this makes sense. The Gebrigs Division is interesting. While I had not thougth of it before I am sure they had horses and pack animals so the cavalry background would be useful.

As you may noticed as well, all the units listed are "recon" (Aufklärungs) Abteilungs. They often employed horses (Reiter unit) or bikes (Radfahr). I think it is worthy to point out to you that the abilities of these men were more than likely not utilized with pack animals, or supply, but with forward reconnaisance and scouting.

You are also correct in assuming that many of the Reiter Regimets became Schützen Regiments and later Panzergrenadier Regimets.
