Hi everyone ,
I've some questions about the Wachbataillon Wien.
1) a friend of mine has a photo he recently bought on ebay. The description put by the seller tells it's a Geschütz Gelände in Mulhouse France and the Geschützbedienungen are men of the Wachbataillon Wien. He dated the photo of 1943. I tried to track this unit. What i have read on Forum der Wehrmacht ( http://www.forum-der-wehrmacht.de/in...ataillon-WIEN/ ) makes me think this unit never left the area of the Wehrkreis XVII.
2) other photos of the same seller mentionned the same Wch-Btl. in 1940 in the aera of Dijon. After the same topic on FdW the unit was subordinated to Division z.b.V. 417 in 1940 and again it seemed to never have left the Wehrkreis XVII.
3) i've checked into the KStn 4138 (Wachtruppe Wien (name of the unit after 1944). No mention of an Infanterie-Geschutz-Kompanie. Yet there is a 7,5 cm lIG 18 on my friend's photo!
4) by checking the shoulder straps of the Bedienungen we can't see the W characteristic of the Wch.-Btl. Wien.
So my questions are :
1) what precisly was a Wachbataillon? For which use were these unit created?
2) were these units equipped with IG 18 or Geschützen in general?
3) has the Wachbataillon Wien really participated to the campaign of France in 1940? And did these unit ever stationned or just go to the sector of Mulhouse (Wehrkreis V) during the war?
4) has someone the Kriegsgliederung of the unit and his commanders?
Thanks ,
Von Kluck
