    7th Infantery Division!

    Hi all,
I'm doing research on the divisions 'fought' in my village. I recently (10 minutes ago!) found out that the 7th German Infantery Division was in my village. Does anyone has more info about them? I would really appreciate it!
    Thanks a lot in advance,
    Junior.

Hi Junior, 7th Infantry Division was mobilised on 26th August 1939, Wkr VII, Munich. the 7th fought in southern Poland in September 1939, and in the French campaign the following year fought the British Expeditionary Force in Belgium. It went into reserve after the fall of Dunkirk. In 1941 took part in the invasion of Russia with Army Group Centre, it was involved in the thrust towards Moscow and the defence against the Russian counteroffensive which saved the capital. The division took part in the Kursk offensive of July 1943 as part of XLVI Panzer Corps. It managed to escape the near destruction of Army Group Centre in the summer of 1944 and conducted a fighting retreat througjh Poland. It was finally cut off by the last Soviet offensive and ended the war behind Russian lines on the Hela Peninsula at the mouth of the Vistula where it surrendered on 8th May 1945. Thats a very brief potted history.

        Cheers
        Ian
