    Soldiers Based in Norway WW2

    Hi fellow collectors and friends.

Im currently searching for units based in my hometown in Norway.

The problem is that this county\city\region was merged during the 60's

The smaller communities were pooled togehter to make a larger one.

In the smaller coomunities their names was: Skjeberg, Borgen, Hafslund, Greåker, Tune, Varteig And Sarpsborg.
The main name used now is Sarpsborg.

Im looking for an help regarding these communities, as so for the search of correct award documents, soldbuchs etc to fulfill my collection fromthe districts of my hometown

Large numbers of soldiers were based here during the war, so something must have been written down in a soldbuch or a wehrpass etc

I say thank you for all your help

    Best regards from Henrik

I have a relative who spent part of his time in the Heer in Norway. He was part of the landing force that came ashore in Oslo. He fought through Honefoss, Gjovik, Valdres, and was wounded in the left shoulder in Tonsanssen. I have his Soldbuch and his service records, if of interest. I know that this is outside of the area you were asking about though.

      Hei Henrik

With the exception of Sarpsborg you would be very lucky indeed to find other place names, if you took in Fredrikstad you'd have more chances.

However, you might want to first understand which units were based in your area of interest and when. As for award documents, the only decorations you're going to find from your area are KVKII and I with swords.

I can give you an idea of which units were based in the area, but this is not a complete list of course.

      mid.1943 . Rgts Stab and I Btl. SS-Pol.Rgt.15
from about sept.43 replaced by abteilung stab and 1 kp. Panzerjäger Abt.214 and 2./Gren.Rgt.355
      From early 1944 replaced by Feldkommandantur 200, 1 and 2 Kp. Pi.Btl.189, Festungs Pi.Stab III./32
      In Greåker 2./Bau.Pi.Btl.425 and 11./Gren.Rgt.1056
      In Borgen 3./Pi.Btl.710
      In Skjeberg 10./Gren.Rgt.1056
by Jul.44 Feldkommandantur 200 had moved to Greåker, Sarpsborg only had Festungs pionier stab III./32, Borgen had 2./Fest.Inf.Btl.A and 4./Bau.Pi.Btl 425
In Sept. 44 II./Art.Rgt.1560 of the newly forming 560 VGD was in Sarpsborg before the division got transferred to the continent.

I can also tell you that after the end of the war there were gathered just under 1000 women, 11 000 men from the heer and LW along with 7500 from the KM in to the reservations in the Fredrikstad area, these were all the personnel in the Østfold region.

          Wow simon.
That was more than i was hoping for regarding info.
          This was a great read!!
As for awards docs if would ever even aquire one from the districts of interest i would be overcome with joy.
Im making it my equal in collecting to get a hold of as many documents, pics etc for my collection as do i wish to make it a contribution with the very small museum here in Sarpsborg.

So thanks alot for this info :-)

Very very unlikely you will find an award doc with Sarpsborg named as there were no commands of a high enough level to make awards so you need to keep your eyes open for the units. Not easy as clearly there was a lot of movement of units in the area with most only staying for a number of months.

If you take in Halden then you have a lot more choice, in particular the polizei units stationed there like Pol.Btl.253, III./SS-Pol.Rgt.28 and II./SS-Pol.Rgt.27. So Polizei dienstausweis would be a good thing to look out for, as well of course as WP\SB for the Heer units stationed there.

You may also be interested in looking out for Flak paperwork to units in your area.

Schwere Flak Abteilung 511 was stationed in Fredrikstad, it comprised of the following batteries 1./171, 2./562 and 4./562.

I've been collectng paperwork from units in Norway and Finland for over 15 years now and have nothing at all from Østfold.

I have a nice lot of about 40 papers from sarpsborg, red cross some police, but only from the local chapters, no german. Well, its the home town that counts, so soldbuchs axd wehrpasses are of an equal interest as any.

Thank you again for all info, ill bring a notice to leto if youre coming to the next show?
