Interesting Photo with caption, who is he?

An interesting photo with caption in German script

Not an easy one, this - the problem is not the words but the script. I can make out "In remembrance of my ------ military friend [it says friend rather than comrade] / Max / Herr von Schmidt, Major a.D. in the Liberation?? War / year 1863". If anything he looks more dressed for the Italian Wars of Independence, though there wasn't one in 1863 but they were round about that time. So we can assume his name is Max von Schmidt, and that's about as far as I can go.

Any assistance from the forum with the translation and more about the man would be greatly appreciated. Keith

Zum Andenken seinem sehr geerhten u.(nd) lieben Freunde Max H. von Schmidt Major a. D. in dem Freiheitskriege anno 1863. Interesting that the design on the back is Jugendstil which places the production of the card in the 1890's as well as the 1896 medal award from Nuernberg.
