That would mean he likely died of his wounds whilst at the dressing station.

          Hi Wilco,

I can give you the unit information I have:

          Artillerie-Regiment 7

Formed on 6.10.1036, FStO München (WKVII); upon mobilization, I./Art Rgt. 43 Landshut became A.R. 7's heavy Abteilung; on 25.1.1940 the Stab II. Abteilung was given to Artillerie-Regiment 298; on 15.8.1940 the Regimentsstab, III. Abteilung (along with the 2., 4., and 8., Batterien) were given to the Artillerie-Regiment 81 of the 97. leichte Infanterie-Division. The transfers were replaced.

Since Wachtmeister Kimmich wore a disc marked to his field unit, he was likely already serving in the Wehrmacht when the war started, and would therefore have been in all the places the 7. Infanterie Division was from 1.9.1939 to his staff's transfer to Artillerie-Regiment 298 (298. Infanterie-Division) on 25.1.1940. After that he'd have been wherever the 298. I.D fought until his death.

Here are links to web pages on the 7. and 298. Infanterie-Divisionen:
          http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/...sionen/7ID.htm

          http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/...onen/298ID.htm

It's really rare to be able to have a clear idea of the movements of an individual soldier from unit to unit- the information I've provided above should help you with a lot of useful details that you can research further.

          Matt
