Oberfeldwebel August Wiese Crew - 5./KG1

    Hi Guys

I have found some photos in an album I just obtained. The caption says that Oberfeldwebel August Wiese's crew (from 5 Staffel, KG1) was shot down 400km behind the lines between Luga and Leningrad. They walked home in 8 days.

Is anyone aware of this story? If so I would love to know more.

The images show the crew in Russian clothes and back in uniform. It looks like only three made it home. None is wearing the rank insignia of an Oberfeldwebel so maybe Wiese was a Feldwebel at the time or maybe these are borrowed clothes. Wiese is not shown on the KG1 loss list as far as I can see so I believe he is one of these men.

Any information will be most welcome.

Have you tried the 12 O'Clock High Forum? They have members who have a lot of loss files for various units.

Thank you Ian. The names and crew positions you provide and badges in the photo allow us to identify Wiese as the fair-haired, balding Feldwebel with plasters on his head. Very helpful indeed!
