Without more to go on it's going to be a matter of pure chance.

I think though that we can at least speculate that the date the photo was taken was between mid-1942 and mid-1943.

I imagine that, but i would try. I don't really know how many pionier were decorated in the east with DKiG,but i thought that with the medal "maybe" the mission is possible

      Thanks,gabriele

Well at the very least you could draw up a short list. He's a hauptmann so likely got the award either at that rank or as an oberleutnant. So if you were to list all the pionier officers of those ranks who got the award prior to say about autumn 43 then he's almost certainly amongst them, but it's not going to be a small list.

If you could work out what on earth that sign means then you'd have a much better chance, I saw the thread about it and i'm as stumped as everyone else.

          Hi all !

I think this is really an interesting riddle !

I am also really stumped, that it seems almost impossible to find a clear hint to the language, which the inscription on
the wooden shield is based on.
At least this should be possible for : kostra coris dil ...

(I like the idea from the other thread, that it could be a kind of "Front-Kneipe" (pub), and I also assume its
related to some weird German "bad" translation / misspelling) ).

Some suggestions, that might give further clues :
          - Are there any further informations, where the two photos came from (dates, units, other photos) ?!
          - The soldier on the very left (in the insert, photo from militaria.no) has a 3 digit number on his chevron.
This could help to identify his unit, but I am unsure on the digits (although I have some ideas).
          - In case the officer in question was a member of an independent (Heerestruppen-) Pionier unit, this could help :
