Hptmn Otto Bachmaier gef. 1945 in Gailbach bei Schweinfurt

    Hello,

    I found this Sterbebild today.

Hauptmann Otto Bachmaier, KIA on 30. April 1945 in Gailbach / Schweinfurt. On the Volksbund page I find no mention of him nor do I find a Gailbach (bei Schweinfurt).

Does anyone have any additional information about Bachmaier?

    Thank you.

    Erich

Is this the same Otto Bachmaier? Jahrgang 1902 is the only clue to his DOB.

Hello and thank you for the quick replies!

@ Gerdan, Thema Gailbach - I also saw this, but this Gailbach is 118 km from Schweinfurt. ??

@ sdesember: could be - not so sure. BachmEIER is spelled differentls. But it would be a coincidence!

          Hello !

I do not know how often such misspellings occur in those index cards.
(in German, there are several spellings of Meier, Maier, Mayr, Mair, etc..., with Meier and Meyer the most common ones).

But Bachmeier (either form) is a less common name. There is only one in the Stellenbesetzung 1938/39 (an Oberstlt.)

And in this case the first name (!), year of birth, and the rank are correct !
I would assume this matches too well, to be just a chance coincidence.

According to the place where he fell :
There is a village Gaibach (without the l) 12 km south of Schweinfurt, 2 km N of Volkach. Perhaps the family was given
only the the name of the place where he died, without details of the location and that was the only place with a similar name,
that they could find on a map ... (of course this is pure conjecture).

Anyway, there was severe fighting on the 29./30. March in the Aschaffenburg/ Gailbach area, while the American troops
advanced to Schweinfurt about mid April. This makes me believe that Gerdan identified the place correctly .

          Cheers,

          Archi

As the Sterbebild was printed in "Wasserburg am Inn" I think Otto Bachmaier came from the Bavarian area near Waserburg.

              Thank you all!

The weather is nice today, so I am going to take a trip of Wasserburg (I can highly recommend this very beautiful village) and take a look at the Kriegerdenkmal on the Marktplatz.

Any idea what Regiment was fighting in the area?

              Erich
