Helping a German family with their Grandfather. Kriegsmarine Officer soldbuch+pics

Good morning everybody,

Last year I asked on this forum for help about a Kriegsmarine officer but had no information to begin with. I am helping the family of my (German) partner and especially my father in law. He was too young when his own dad died to ask what he did during WWII. People tried hard on this forum but it was hopeless as I only had a name. One year later, we found his soldbuch and war pictures of the man ! Moreover, we have an answer from the Deutsche Dienststelle. All of this is interesting but neither of us are knowledgeable about units and Kriegsmarine info. Could you experts help us have a picture of what he did during WWII ? What was his war ? Did he fight ? What kind of unit was he in ? etc..

What we knew:
Rudolf Grimm was born in 14 August 1914, only a few days after his dad left for WWI. His dad was KIA in France in August 1918. He went in the Kriegsmarine in the thirties and served during WWII. He was POW at the end of the war in France

Well he led a quite life until the last months of the war.

A signals officer on land for most of the war. The EKII award indicates he was part of Marine Regiment Zapp, the FP number is that of the 3 U-Fl. in La Rochelle which Zapp commanded until he took to land fighting

thank you for these information. It is very useful. Good for him that he led a quiet life until 1945. Would the EKII suggest that he fought in 1945 ? Do you know what Chef marinenachrichtendienst mean and what does it implies ?

he was working under the commander of the naval signals service, but i don't know what departments I and III were concerned with.

yes, the EKII indicates he saw some form of combat action in 1945, though as he was an officer it could also be for his command during some operation. Whichever, it is combat related.
