Which weapons did the Volkssturm used ?

    Hallo,

My new project is to make a 1945 Volkssturm mannequin!
I was wondering what sort of weapons did they use?
Is their a sort of list of weapons that they used because I've heard that they also used captured weapons.
Did they also used the ppsh41 ?

    Thank you!

    Kind regards,

    Jeroen.

    Hi,
They were equiped with everything that was available, but mostly with non regulamentar weapons. I've seen pictures of Volkssturm troops with French Lebel 1886 or German black powder Mauser 1871/84 rifles. Mausers G88s were also possible options. Last ditch ("Kriegsmodell") 98k were also common. In my opinion, you can do it with any captured weapon or a late war Mauser 98k.

The VG 1-5 semiauto carbine did not reach a wide production stage and are pretty rare today. However, I don't recalled to have seen any of them with a PPSh41. And you are going to need a Panzerfaust.

    Hope it helps.

    Douglas.

Thank you very much for your info and great photo's!
I like it when you see all kind of different items on a late war mannequin.
This is what I at the moment have on my mannequin, it is not much but it is just a start.
Did the volkssturm also used captured equipment ?

The Volkssturm used everything they had.
Every weapon and all kinds of uniform combinations (and civil clothes).
They where even supplied weapons with no ammo or handgranates with no fuses.

What i've read in books is that most weapons that they got issued where captured weapons (French, Dutch, Belgium, Czech, Italian, Russian..etc..).

It also depends on the unit. Some Volkssturm units got decent weapons and equipment, but most didn't.
I'm collecting anything related to the towns Castricum and Bakkum during WWII.
Also soldbucher from 116pzdiv. And 1944-1945 eastfront pockets, kampfgruppe and Oder front.

If you want a good survey of Volkssturm weapons buy a copy of Weaver, Desperate Measures. As others have said, they used just about anything that could shoot. Probably the most common rifle was the Italian M91 rifle or carbine. In the US such rifles/carbines are easy to get and inexpensive compared to other rifles. The Panzerfaust was also widely used. A lot depends on what kind of unit you are trying to represent but but if you are trying to represent a "typical" Volkssturmmann then probably an Italian rifle is the one you want io use.

'Hitler's Last Levy' is also a good reference book on Volkssturm weapons with some cracking pictures
