I'm looking for information as to where/why a particular soldier won his Knight's Cross. I know his name, rank, unit, and the date of the award. How do I go about finding out more? I am a total rookie at this.

Firstly,welcome here..
The main rule was to the:
Richtlinien für die Verleihung des Ritterkreuzes des Eisernen Kreuzes
(OKH/PA) vom 3. juni 1941.
If you interested about the knight crosses and about the awarded soldiers, please go to the "crosses of the wehrmacht" forum, here are the masters of this theme.
The second way is the books about this theme,on these can be found information about the award criteria and the stories of awarded men.
And of course on the internet can be found informations..
If you search for one name, write to here,I got many help here too..
And happy researching and collecting work!
