            Generallt. Martin Unrein.........

Hello to all ; Edward, a little more................

            Early years and WWI.

Martin Unrein was born on January 01, 1901 in Weimar, where his father was Fiscal Adviser. As a child he wanted to be a soldier and his desire was so great that his father promised to him, on his 11th Birthday, that he should be part of the Royal Prussian Cadet Corps. In the same year (1912) went into the cadet school.

On March 28, 1917 - Unrein had just turned sixteen - he voluntarily presented for military service. He entered the third Thuringian Infantry Regiment 71 and went to France as an ensign (Fähnrich).

He saw action for the first time during the offensive of May 1917 in Reims. He took part in the struggles of July 1917 also and he was awarded with the Iron Cross Second Class (Eisernen Kreuz II. Klasse). A little later, he received the Grand Duchy of Saxe-Weimar's Medal of Merit in Gold with Swords (Großherzoglich-Sachsen-Weimarische Verdienstmedaille in Gold mit Schwertern).

The young soldier saw action for the last time in the defensive struggles on September in Champagne, at Tahure and St. Martin. There he was wounded and fell in captivity during the great French counter-offensive on September 25, 1918.

Because this fact, was submitted his pending promotion to Leutnant due to his gallantry against the enemy. Martin Unrein remained in French captivity until February of 1920. He had decided, even now, to remain as a soldier.

              WWI Fighting as a Teenager!

              Dear Sir,

Very interesting story about Martin Unrein fighting bravely in France during World War I. I guess the French had really made Unrein's life as a POW pretty miserable indeed. So there were Germans who were born in 1901 and perhaps 1902 had managed to see combat on the Western Front and win the Iron Cross Second Class! Thank you for this new information.

              Merry Christmas!

                  Generallt. Martin Unrein.........

Hello to all ; a little more................

                  Reichswehr.............

Later he joined the Infantry Regiment 21 and was sent to the War School at Munich. In 1921, he was transferred to the 9th (Prussian) Cavalry Regiment in Fürstenwalde / Spree. From here he was commanded to the Cavalry School.

On Jul 01, 1922 he was promoted to lieutenant (Leutnant). At this time he was in Beeskow in the Mark, serving with the 4th squadron of the 9th cavalry regiment.

After his transfer to the 7th (Prussian) Cavalry Regiment in Breslau (Wroclaw) he became a signal officer. On July 01, 1928 he was promoted to first lieutenant (Oberleutnant). Just over a year later he was in his old regiment in Breslau (Wroclaw) as Regimental adjutant. But he was not happy in this position because he liked the service with the troops.

After his promotion to Captain (Rittmeister) on September 01, 1933 he took over the 4th squadron of the 7th Cavalry Regiment at Lueben (Silesia).

Dear Edward ; you're welcome. Yes, a plainly translation would be Martin Dirty (or in spanish Martin "el sucio") but it seems that Martin fought quite "clean" in a very "dirty" war...... Regards. Raúl M .
