    Unit markings on captured flag

I received this detail picture from a friend of mine. It's a detail from a very large sized flag with runic symbols. The flag was brought back to the US after the war and was according the story most probably captured somewhere in Italy. There are NO details known were the flag was captured/liberated.

The flag still resides with the veterans family in the US.

There are only a few markings on the flag, as you can see on the picture.

Maybe it gives away from which unit the flag was captured. It's not a Feldpostnumber...the number has to many digits. Maybe it's even not a German marking.

    Maybe someone can help.

    Thanks.

    Garrison size flag

By the size I would say it's a garrison flag. The numbers probably will not help ID it much. As far as "where" the flag was captured, it's going to be almost impossible to nail down. Sorry

      Hello EM:
Interesting looking flag. Wondering what the measured
size is, and if the "runic symbols" are printed or sewn on?

            flag

The "I.65...." writing is not in my opinion written by a German and therefore is likely American notation. No idea what ity means....infantry regt. number?

Great to hear, likely a large SS-Lager flag (OFW type 1).

This look to me like a museum accession number. Whatever I means, then the item came to them in 1965, the 1st accession for that year, and the 395th part of the first accession. 65.1.395

                Perhaps...

                  Hello xaf:
My first guess was that the I.65.1.395 was
maybe Infantry Division #65, 1st battalion
395th Infantry Regiment. But the 395th IR
was assigned to the 99th ID per the Internet...

"was a unit of the United States 99th Infantry Division.
It was organized with the rest of the 99th on 16 November
1942 at Camp Van Dorn, Mississippi. During the Battle of
the Bulge, the Regiment—at times virtually surrounded by
Germans—was one of the few units that did not yield ground
to the attacking Germans. On at least six occasions they called
in artillery strikes on or directly in front of their own positions.
Their success in defending Höfen resulted in the 395th Infantry
Regiment being repeatedly assigned to other divisions for difficult
assignments during the remainder of the war, earning them the

                    No repsonse on the size

OWF I dropped the question about the accurate sizes..but don't have a answer yet from the US.

                    Will let you know asap
