Sturzkampfgeschwader 101 in Metz, France, 1943

Guys, I am researching a Soldbuch of an Obergefreiter of the 4. Staffel of Sturzkampfgeschwader 101, who was killed on September 24, 1943. At that time, the II. Gruppe of St.G.101 was based in Metz-Frescaty. I am not aware if he was amongst the flying personnel. He is burried in Dagneux. Does anyone have access to lists of losses of this unit, or does someone know what happened on Metz-Frescaty air base on this date (bombing perhaps, or another incident)?

    Thanks!

Soldiers killed in the Metz area were not buried in Dagneux, which only covers the general area of southern and eastern France. This means your man died quite far from Metz, suggesting he may have been flying personel.

That date would put it around the fighting in Sicily. Stab & I Gruppe were based at St Raphael on the French Med coast at that time. Maybe he was loaned to either Stab or I/StG 101 for that period and took part in operations although that wouldn't explain why he would be buried at Dagneux. Alternatively, maybe it was a flying accident?

LOL....two year old thread, however if you still have it and a name I can take a look Tim!

Of course 101 was a training unit....he could have been on a combat mission with the Einsatzstaffel that day or on a training flight......

Jean-Loup, Kevin, Ian, thanks for your replies. Even though this thread is indeed two years old, I do still have it. His name was Erich Nöcker, Obergefreiter, let me know Ian if you need any more details, thanks in advance!

            Hi Tim,

I can not find a loss report for him unfortunately.

The Volksbund lists his location of death as being Toulon.
At least part of Sturzkampfgesch 101 had been in southern France at that time and lost a certain number of men in training crashes.

Thanks for your time, Ian, and Jean-Loup.. that's quite interesting! I'm a 100% sure this was not mentioned on the Volksbund site two years ago? Else I would not have known he is burried in Dagneux.

I've checked the Volksbund site, gone back some time/years later and the info has changed....due to perhaps being wrong in the first place or new evidence being found!
