    Generalmajor Georg Benthack

Can anyone post images of General Benthack? He was the Fortress Commander of Crete. I have one of him as an officer pre-war but that is it.

How would I locate photos of him. I am also looking for biographical info on this man.

    Hi CCJ!

This site has his bio, though unfortunately the same pre-war pic of him.

Thank you. That is a handy site to use. I saw this before but lost my link. I can't understand why there are no photos of this man.

          - - 1939 EK I –S-: 05.06.1940
          - - 1939 EK II –S-: 03.10.1939
          - - 1914 EK I: 04.05.1919
          - - 1914 EK II: 27.05.1917
          - - Hamburgisches Hanseatenkreuz: 20.07.1916
          - - Ehrenkreuz für Frontkämpfer: 20.11.1934
          - - Wehrmacht-Dienstauszeichnung IV Klasse: 01.04.1937
          - - Heeres-Flakabzeichen

Wouldn't this man have received more decorations than this? Also, being a commander of a Arty Regt skhouldn't he have been awarded a Gen Assault Badge to?
What about that nice uniform that is displayed here?

            ...

Yes, it's quite probable he received more decorations than are listed in his ABR bio. We do our best to include as many as we can, but we can only go by the sources available to us.

            Best wishes,

I have a copy of Benthacks certificate for the 1 October Medal so I know he received that one. I would think he would have received the 8 year service medal to being in the army in WW1 and then starting again in 1936. War service counted double I think.

I guess there is no way to find out if someone was awarded foreign awards.

                Hey Charles,

Unless you can find his Solbuch (spelling?) or a photo of him.... you will only get the high end awards... Even if you get his service record from the Archives... chances are nothing lower than his IC's will show up. This was the same problem I had with Speth.. until I found a pic of him with his complete set of ribbons...

                Cheers

                  Hi Mark,

Your Speth display and bio are very good. You are lucky to have those photos. Benthack's tunic has loops for 5 awards and ribbon bar loops that fits about 8 or 9 ribbons. I do know he was awarded the March 1938 medal because I have a copy of his award certificate. I think because he served in a Observation Bn and a Motorized Arty Bn he probably was also awarded a Gen Ass Badge along with his Flak Badge. It true that leave room for one more. To me, ithe loops look like they are for a wound badge...

I think you might want to check out this link to Hermann Historica if you are interested in Benthack's docs!! http://www.hermann-historica-ohg.de/gb.html

Thanks, I wish I could get copies of these documents. I probably cannot afford to buy the original. I want to try to get in touch with the winner when the time comes.

                        Hey Charles,

You might want to e-mail the auction to see if they would make the copies for you before they sell it... perhaps even offer to send them some cash for thier trouble.....

This IS the set of docs you should have.... !

                        Cheers

                          Hi Mark,

I just got finished doing just that. I have offerred to pay for the copies. Man, if I can raise some money I'll buy it.
THAT MEANS... selling some of my stuff!!!!

If anyone whats some of my collection let me know. I sometimes sell stuff without thought

I have a few ribbon bars, orders, and caps. Ribbons are German, the caps are imperial german and the orders of international that are good for axis and allies.
