    57 inf div information please

I would like info on the 57 inf div from 1939-1943. I would mainly like to know about what they did in the invasion of France, Poland, and Russia I know that they were there but how much were they actually fighting how many casulties did they sustain that sort of thing. And if anyone can I would like information on the 1./Pz Jag Abt. 157 of the 57 inf div that was their Panzerjager detatchment.

    Thanks all

    57 Infanterie Division 1939-43.

Hello Ethan ; a little history about it..............

The route to Abbeville - France 1940.

The 57. Infanterie-Division was mobilized as part of the 2nd Wave on 26 August 1939 in Landshut, Germany. The division was formed using mostly reserve personnel from Bavaria and immediately sent to southern Poland as part of Heeresgruppe Sud (acting as reserve it saw little action in that campaign). On 21 September 1939, the division’s Infanterie-Regiment 199 was given the title “List”, in honor of the Bavarian Regiment Hitler served with during World War One. During the winter of 1939-40 the division was held in the reserve of OKH. In preparation for the invasion of France and the Low Countries, the 57. Infanterie-Division was moved westward during April 1940 and assigned to the 4. Armee of Heeresgruppe B.

The units under this division were:

    Infanterie-Regiment 179
    Infanterie-Regiment 199
    Infanterie-Regiment 217
    Artillerie-Regiment 157
    Aufklarungs-Abteilung 157
    Panzerjager-Abteilung 157
    Pionier-Bataillon 157
    Nachrichten-Abteilung 157

Hello to all ; here goes something more...............

      "Infanterie Regiment List".

Preface. For several months we carry with pride the name "Infantry Regiment List". We have taken throughout the course of the war the tradition of a regiment, which has despite its short existence, a particularly glorious history. No other regiment of the German Army as the "Infantry Regiment List" has so many fallen heroes in action. Four years on the Western Front, four years of fighting in the bloodiest battlefields of World War. From the coast of Flanders to the mountains of Alsace paving the way the graves which indicate that there lies a "Lister". 3,754 officers, NCOs and soldiers fell for their country or died in captivity, by accident or disease. Our greatest pride is that our leader and commander in chief belonged to this regiment as a soldier. This tradition is a commitment. Commitment to the "List Regiment" comrades in the old esprit de corps, endurance, heroism and equality.

Heinrich-Anton Deboi. Oberst and Commanding Officer.

The route to Abbeville - France 1940.

On May 21, 1940 the march proceeded by Fontaine de Brulet - Monthermé, crossing the Meuse there by a pontoon bridge; the unit had already 14 days of forced marches, traveling between 40-60 kilometers a day always behind the armored divisions. The few hours of sleep were in the open air under the vehicles.

The route to Abbeville - France 1940.

The phrase: first the horse, then the man had been fulfilled to the fullest. Without the help of our comrades, taking care of the horses would have been impossible. More than a horse had collapsed and had to be shot. Anyway had much cattle, abandoned cows and horses, running free everywhere.

The German Luftwaffe had the air superiority, despite of that, the French and British planes attacked the marching columns over and over again with bombs and machine guns. On the road the same picture: destruction everywhere, positions and abandoned villages, destroyed tanks, burned cars, bridges blown up, planes shot down, destroyed cities, columns of refugees, prisoners, wounded and dead.

Brief pause in the march to the front.

Yes, but before, Hitler visited “his” unit – the 199th IR - on Christmas day 1939 in the vicinity of Hanau. The location is one of the never told secrets until now …

But try a look in another forum and a thread there, and learn more:

                      Hello

In the book "Woronesh/Don Stellung 1942/43 - Ausgewählte Dokumente" by Dr. Andreas Schwarz second print 1978 there are some references to places where 57ID fought.

In the II. Teil (2nd part) on page 476 i read:

From page 495 till 501 there is a small part of actions from 12.01.1943 till 12.2.1943 concerning the Rückmarsch von Woronesh.

If i understand it correctly it is a resume for a worked text written by Oberst i.G. Eckstein former Ia from 57 ID and from Korpsgruppe Siebert.

It is too many text to type it but when i see a name of a place i'll type it:

Panzer in Gorshechonoye eingedrungen.

Gr.

                        1. Gruppe: Führer Oberst Lenz. Antreten am 3.2. 3,00 Uhr. Gr. R. 164, I./A.R.157, 3. / Pz.Abw. 157.
                        2. Gruppe: Führer Gen.Lt. Siebert. Antreten am 3.2. 19,30 Uhr. Ski Batl. 157, Pi 157, I./217, N.A. 157, II./A.R.157
                        3. Gruppe: Oberst Latz
