    Maginot line information

    Hi

Would anyone have a list, or point me in the right direction, of the german reference for Forts and fortress of the Maginot line. For example, the petits ouvrage - La Ferté, was called Panzerwerk 505 by the Germans.

    Thanks

    French forts (Maginot Line).

Hello cesky67 , just to start, these were the french forts (Maginot Line) taken by the German Army before the Armistice:

(fort, french code, french unit, fortified sector, german code, capture date and german unit)

    La Ferté - no 15 - 155e RIF - SF de Montmedy - Panzerwerk 505 - 2 juin* - II/191 IR (71 ID)

    Kerfent - A.34 - 156e RIF - SF de Faulquemont - Panzerwerk 240 - 21 juin - I/339 IR (167 ID)

    Bambesch - A.35 - 156e RIF - SF de Faulquemont - Panzerwerk 230 - 20 juin - II/339 IR (167 ID)

    Haut Poirier - 133e RIF - SF de la Sarre - Panzerwerk 434 - 21 juin - 486 IR (262 ID)

    Welschoff - 166e RIF - SF de Rohrbach - Panzerwerk 579 - 24 juin - 482 IR (262 ID)

    * On this day soldiers from the 6/ IR 191 went inside the block 2 and found the 107 french soldiers all dead.

It will give you an idea about the German numeration. Hope be useful in some way.

There is no definitive list of Panzerwerk numbers. The only source of them that I have seen are the maps used by the Wehrmacht in 1940. However, even that can be confusing because it seems that the numbers were sometimes different on maps for the same sector. For example, I have seen hence PW 210 used to designate GO Schoenenbourg in SF Haguenau, as well as Casemate Einseling Nord in SF Faulquemont.

Another example is the Maubeuge area where maps in the Bundesarchiv list the PW as:
      262 Boussois
      350 Salmagne
      380 Bersillies
      420 Sarts
      400 Crevecoeur
      525 Eth
      552 Talandier
      533 Jeanlain

Meanwhile, the "Denkschrift über die Französische Landesbefestigung" lists them differently:
      184 Heronfontaine
      182 Sarts
      179 Crevecoeur
      177 Bersillies
      176 Salmagne
      161 Epinette
      159 Boussois

      Regards,
      Marc

Thanks Raúl M and Marc for the great effort you have done. It seems that it is very confusing list. However it is a great start and thanks again for the help.
