Interesting, Previtera's book cites only 492 Ritterkreuz trager as having served in the bundeswehr!!

I believe ’57 pieces were never sold on the basis of entitlement to the piece, during the war a solder would have to present his Wehrpass or award document before he was able to purchase a replacement piece, I am fairly sure this was never enforced with the ’57 pieces. <O</O

Ok this post from Gordon Williamson should prove that, unfortunatley anybody could buy a RK whether they were entitled to it or not.

I still regularly see reference to 1957 "neue Form" decorations as "Bundeswehr" awards or that veterans had to provide an award document or some other proof to be allowed to purchase one.

In fact, 1957 awards were always available, "over the counter" to anyone who wanted to buy one. They were never specifically for the Bundeswehr but for anyone who wished to wear or display, but couldn't because of the swastika, their original awards whether members of the Bundeswehr or not.

It was only the modern awards of the Bundesrepublik that required production of proof of entitlement from someone who wanted to buy one.

Note para 2 here refers to providing proof of entitlement and para 3 specifically points out that this does NOT apply to awards from before 8 May 1945.

More , note the second last para. Awards from before 8 May 1945 could be acquired without providing an "ausweiss" or proof of entitlement.
And the last para., referring to the 3rd Para of the regulations applying to collectors.

this is a very interesting thread but I have a question,

In an old correspondance with Steinhauer , over 20 year ago, stated that over 95% of the 1957 Replacement medals and badges were sold to collectors and militaria dealers, around the world. Steinhauer's correspondant clearly stated these were not German government issues or that the German government had ordered any. They were strictly for private purchase. Unfortunately, many of my files were lost, but I clearly remember the letters. I had written to get information on which medals and badges were authorized and which forbidden.

I don't think that is a concern given the quality of the last batch but please read post #32 for the guidelines, Post war the govenment didn't want a bar of regulating awards earnt during the nazi regime. Not sure if they authorized the design or not?!

I just want to tell you something that happen to me in Berlin. It was in 1998, at that time I did not know anything about German Awards. The only thing I knew was that I liked the shape and colors of the Iron Cross. So, I did not know about the Swastika on it and less about the 57 form. Walking on the streats I saw something my eyes could not believe, a shop that sale IRON CROSSES!!!!

So I went in and asked for one of them and guess what? yes, THEY DID ASK ME FOR A DOCUMENT TO PROVE THAT I WAS AWARDED THE DECORATION!!!!

They say I could buy the small crosses but not a real official awards.

Believe or not that happen to me. I am not an expert on this essue and I do not want to star a polemic here, I just wanted to tell you my story about it.
