From my point of view only the WASt/Deutsche Dienststelle in Berlin could know this.

But normally they refuse to give such information to other persons than near family members

You should try to contact the VB, many times, if recovered from the field, they have the info about the dog tags and from that you can arrive to which units the man belonged.
