    Alfred Riekstins

    Hello,

I was looking through the uniform cufftitle info and came across this name. Alfred Riekstins ...It said that this exSS Officer died in 1959 in Latvia fighting the soviets! Does anyone know the story behind this in some detail. Also of units fighting after the war and what happened to them.
My uncle was tasked as a border guard during his compultory military time in East Czechoslovakia in the early 50's. He told me that a number of times they have been warned to keep a look out for German "Bandits" trying to fight their way westward.
A friend of mine in Czech told me that a large unit was called "Banderovci" following their leader Bander. I don't remember his first name. Anyway he fought his way with 100s of men(there was thousands of them innitianly)Through Russia then using the czech border, made it all the way to Germany. This occured in the early to mid 50's. Bander I think was Latvian, he was assassinated in Germany in the 60's by the Soviets...I guess payback for getting away.

    Hi!

Alfreds Riekstins, born 30.01.1913 in Matkule. In 1942 Riekstins volunteered to fight against the communists, served in the 24. Talsu Btl., later in the 2. Reg. of the 2. Brig. By 1945, Riekstins was in the 19. Pi. Btl. Promoted to Ustuf. 22.04.1945 and awarded the RK.

On 9.May, 1945, Riekstins successfully escaped to Sweden by boat. Lived in Göteborg. At the beginning of the 1950s Riekstins was recruited by the British Secret Service. After training in Germany, Riekstins was parachuted into Latvia on 30.08.1952 with 2 other agents. Betrayed by Kim Philby, Riekstins' hiding place was surrounded by KGB soldiers and having used up all of his ammo, Riekstins used his cyanide capsule and died a hero's death on 11.09.1952. His final resting place is unknown to this day but a commemorative stone was erected at the place he died on 12.09.1992.

Stepan Bandera was not Latvian, but a Ukrainian nationalist.
