The 1939 rank list has a Oberleutnant Petersen as Chef of 2nd Kompanie.

That I know, but be aware that 1939 Rangliste actually reflects situation as per 1938 as it was issued on 3.1.1939. Many names weren't anyhow valid during mobilisation in August/September 1939.
I need to verify if Obltn. Petersen was still Chef 2./I.R.37 or if it was somebody else.
Perhaps somebody owns a book on 6 I.D. with proper Sept. 1939 officer listing to verify this?

In the 6.Inf.Div.-book he's not mentioned.

Sorry, the book only gives the 03.01.1939 Stellenbesetzung, and from then on only the names of the Div.Stab-Offz. and Btl.-Kdr. Only the names and no ranks. In the text only a few officers are mentioned, but not the Chef 2./IR37.

You may be lucky and find something in the archives of the 6 ID

Check out the NARA guides online pinned thread on this forum.

You can either visit the Bundesarchiv personally, order digital copies of the microfilm rolls that might be of interest from NARA or pay a researcher to have a look for you.
