    Obergfreiter Willi Skodowsky: Honor Goblet

I wondered if anyone can provide info on Obergefreiter Willi Skodowsky, his unit etc

He was awarded the Luftwaffe Honor Goblet 16-8-42

The only thing I can tell you is he was a bordmechaniker.

      Andy,

If possible you should try to run down an Ehrenliste (basically the list compiled and sent out around the time of the award) which would indicate the type of unit which your man flew with i.e. Bomber, Recon. etc..

From that point you can at least narrow down the possible avenues to pursue. My hunch is he is probably bomber crew but again w/o the Ehrenliste it might be an effort in futility to pursue that direction.

        Thanks guys...

Rich, where did you come by that info?

Frankly, I've always been confused about how to research EP recipients from a cold start, w/ just the name, rank and date...I thought there was a book that listed recipients and their unit?

Also, given his award date, what Ehrenliste date should I be looking for?

          Andy,

Not trying to put words in Andy's mouth but I suspect he found the info. in the following book.

Patzwall K.D., Der Ehrenpokal für besondere Leistung im Luftkrieg, Studien zur Geschichte der Auszeichnungen, Band 6, Verlag Klaus D. Patzwall, Norderstedt, 2008, ISBN 978-3-931533-08-3

Patzwall's book includes the date, rank and position within the crew, unfortunately it does not give the type of unit.

In terms of the Ehrenliste date it will probably be in the list on or fairly close to the 16 Aug. date. I did find an Ehrenliste for 31 Aug. but your man is not listed.

          Regards

Jeremy, thanks...almost certainly a bomber crewman I would say. I do know that he received no DKiG or RK. I recently snagged his ALPAKA goblet here in the US from an estate liquidation. Nice piece I think, but on the lower end of the spectrum recipient-wise.

              Andy you are quite welcome.

Let me look around in the unit histories I have for bomber units, etc. and see if his name comes up. At least with the award date I can pin down a basic timeframe.

If he was a MIA or KIA it will be easier to find but I will see what if anything I can find.

              Regards

                Andy

                The information is from
Die inhaber des Ehrenpokals fur Besondere Leistung im Luftwaffe
                Horst Scheibert
                Podzun-Pallas-Verlag
                ISBN 3-7909-0283-7
This also lists the honour clasp winners of the Heer, W-SS and Kriegsmarine.

The date given in this book is 24.08.42

There's every chance the guy could also have been in a transport, recce or seaplane unit.

                        Hi ,

I checked the German War Graves site and there is no record of a Willi Skodowsky and no listings under 'Skodowsky'. It is likely that he survived the war which unfortunately closes that avenue of research.
