    Gebirgsjager Personnel

Are there any sites on the internet that list who served in each unit?

No is the simple answer. Not even in the archives.

Is there a particular name you're looking for?

      No particular name.

I have a dog tag that I thought I might be able to trace the owner using the number and unit on the tag.

For that, the only chance you have is to ask the Deutsche Dienststelle but to be honest i doubt very much they'd do it in this case.

They and the German wargraves administration really don't like dog tag collectors for obvious reasons.

What's the unit out of interest?

I have a similar problem in identifying a GJR officer.

Here is a link to some of the photos that I posted.

          7th. Gebirgs-Division Officer grouping:

          http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...=477935&page=3

          Highlights of the link:

Grouping with tunic, a period wedding photo of the GJR officer wearing the very same tunic, his erkennungsmarke (Dogtag), some extra insignia and a unit engraved knife.

          The Erkennungsmarke reads 11/JR 55 N.62.

Which I think is the 11th company, 3rd Battalion Inf Regiment 55, roll number 55. Check me out here?

Does anyone know if there is there a way to find out his name from the roll number?

          The history:

Infanterie-Regiment 55 stood up on 15. Oktober 1935 under Wehrkreis VII in Würzburg.

Note, the Wedding photo was taken in Würzburg in 1943.

GJR officer Inf Reg. ID tag that tracks:

It seems that after the invasion of Poland and France that the 3rd BN was turned into Infanterie-Regiment 218, then on 10. Oktober 1941 changed again to Jäger-Regiment 218. Note, he put in new shoulder boards, but just recolored his collar tabs.

          Jäger-Regiment 218 was re-designated Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 218.

The Knife that came with the group is inscribed GJR Regt 218.

“Das Jäger-Regiment 218 wurde am 10. Oktober 1941 aufgestellt. Das Regiment entstand durch die Umbenennung des Infanterie-Regiment 218. Das Regiment blieb weiter der 99. leichten Division unterstellt. Bereits am 15. November 1941 wurde das Regiment bei der Umgliederung zur 7. Gebirgs-Division in Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 218 umbenannt.”

The 7. Gebirgs-Division spent a lot of time in Lappland and Norway, so the style of the knife makes sense!

So, this all seems to track! It is just so frustrating having all this information, erkennungsmarke, (Dogtag) photo, uniform and no name!

Perhaps someone has a unit history and can recognize this young GJR Hauptmann and later Major based on his wedding photo.

Help, need name to Erkennungsmarke 11/JR 55 N.62.

          Thanks!

Now that's frustrating. If he stayed with the 7 GD until the end i'm almost certain i'd be able to find him mentioned here or there in the documents i have.

What's the year on the wedding photo? is it 1943? and what's the inscription?

If he was with 218 and made major before the end then i should be able to shortlist him.

Here's the information from the tag.

              275
              St.I/G.JErs.Btl. 98

Blood type A on the back

I'm assuming(maybe wrongly) that the trooper survived the war as his dog tag is in one piece.

That would be great! The Wedding Photo is dated 1943, I believe that the inscription is just the Photo Studio in Wurzburg and the 1943 date. Please take a look at the link in my previous post, maybe you can read it? If not, I can take a closer shot of it?

I would look at the newly commisoned OberFahnrichs in the 1939 Ranglist and try to match them to Majors in the 1944 list. That probably will give you only one or two names. Not for sure but it may work. The 1944 list will show the officers posting in 1939.
