is there any way to find out the name of this soldier or his service record based on his ID disk. 3. Pz.Abw.563 117

I have his tunic and would like to find out more about him.

Each unit had a roster list they kept with the soldier's name and his disk information. Some of these survived but it is a trick to find them. I would look for records of the parent units. WASt has most of this data but are hit and miss as to what they will tell you or to what extent they will help non-family. Based on the information for the unit the tag is early War dating to 1940-, one problem with the tags is when they transfered they kept their original tags so you really need to find the initial roster for the first unit.

I would say that he started out as EM and later promoted to (NCO and) Leutnant, as the number on this early dogtag is pretty high for in a company.
Is the tunic named on the inside?

Your best chance is WASt, but like Johnny said its hard as non-family member.
