    Saint Nazaire

    Hey,

I'm new here so please point me in the right direction if this has been talked about before.

Her Opa never said much about the war but I just got my request back from WASt and this is what I have found so far.

My wife's Opa was in the Kreigsmarine from April 41- 11 May 45 at which point he sat in a French POW camp until the end of 1946.

According to his records he served with the 44. Minensuchflottille from mid 1941 to late 1942 at which point he was transfered to the 14. U-Jagdflottille. He took a course called the "Hilfssignalgastenlehrgang in Fall '43 then rejoined the 14th until Fall of '44 when he became a Marine Grenadier in the Abt. Haackert at Fortress Saint Nazaire.

The point of my post is: What awards, if any, were the defenders of Saint Nazaire awarded? He would have become eligible for the 4 year long service award in April '45 but I have no clue of they were handing out any awards at that point.

    Any help would be appreciated!

Since he served so long on minsweepers, no doubt he was awarded that badge. Wounded??? He would not have gotten the 4 year medal as they discontinued awarding that one when the war broke out. For pension purposes, each war year counted as double. As a grenadier, it is possible that he could have gotten the infantry assault badge, there are numerouse pictures of naval personnel that were awarded this badge in the final days. Since he was under siege by the Americans, it could have been entered into his Soldbuch, but actually get it? Probably not. As they were in the defensive, did he ge it?? Again, probably not. He might have gotten the EK2 for the amount of time he spent on the minesweeper or for action in defense of the port. Hope this helps or stears you in the right direction. Any pictures of him??

There are several pictures of him but they are both in his normal work dress and very early on in the war so there are no medals on him. I know he was issued the War Medal for minesweeping in 1943 but that is the only one that is entered in the document we were sent by WASt. I know that there must be more because it doesn't list his wound badge or being awarded it.

I would assume that he would have been eligible for the Infantry assualt badge since he spent eight months on the defensive line south of St. Nazaire. His unit traded in their navy blues for infantry feldgrau in Sept 1944 and were on the line until 10 May 45.

I have also been in contact with a Gentlemen who owns a museum in Saint Nazaire to try and find out what all went on there during 44-45 seeing as they were cut off from the rest of the Wehrmacht. I am putting a shadow box together based on the information I have been learning and want to be as accurate as possible. My dilemma is do I include badges and medals he was eligible for but was never issued to to the logistics of getting them to the troops? Is it dishonest to include them? I am personally leaning towards including them because any other nation would have been granted the medals post war if the situation was reversed.
