LW FW Otto Wuerfel. any Info on him ??

    Hi all,

I am chasing some information on a pilot, as I have his Knight's Cross, and would love to have some additional information, and possibly a photo or two of him, if anyone can assist.

The person I am looking for information on, is Oberfeldwebel Otto Wuerfel of JG 51,

Finding out some information on him is a bit difficult as it is a late war group, but this is what I know about him so far,
Born 3 December 1920 in Uelzen/Niedersachsen, was posted missing from 23 Feb 1944 around Rogatschew in Russia,
and died on the 22nd December 1944. His rank at that time was an Oberfeldwebel.

Posted in to 9./JG 51 mid 1942 as an Unteroffizier, mid 1943 he had around 9 victories, was involved in many dive bombing
    operations.

Posted for a short period of time to Erg. Gr. Ost as an instructor he could have been
    under training perhaps.

Within 5 months of returning to 9./JG 51 he had 70 victories to his credit, on the 21 Feb 1944 he shot down 6 enemy
aircraft, and was transferred to 8./JG 51.

On the 23rd Feb, 1944 he collided in mid air with his wingman Ofw Dittlmann, northwest of Rogatschew. Both aircraft came
down, Dittlmann was killed in the crash, Wuerfel was captured and interned in camp 280/5 in the area of Stalino. He
    died in captivity of Typhus.

Promoted to Leutnant posthumously, and his final victory tally was 79 victories.

    RK awarded 4 May 1944.

    DKiG awarded February 1944.

I have the Obermaier books, and there is a photo of him in there, with his RK, which would have been added after he went into captivity, so it is a 'doctored' photo of him, and is the only one I have seen of him so far.

    Thanks for looking,

    Cheers

    Bob

Sadly this grouping has been broken up, I have the RK, I am not sure where the rest of it is now, I did hear that the paperwork was with a collector in Queensland, but can't confirm this. The RK is a Micro 800 S & L type 'A' without the flaw in the beading.

You might of already had a look at these avenues already, however if not, they may well prove of use:

His combat claims submitted to the RLM can be researched here on Tony Wood's excellent research site:

              http://don-caldwell.we.bs/claims/tonywood.htm

Some career information will be here on the Kracker Archive:

              http://www.aircrewremembrancesociety...erArchive.html

.....and some may also be here on Kacha's Luftwaffe Page:

              http://www.luftwaffe.cz/

Finally, the '12 O' Clock High!' Forum has a membership base with a very extensive knowledge base:

              http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/

              I hope this might help.

              Regards Richard.
Always looking for Luftwaffe Kampfflieger related document groups. In particular anything to Kampfgeschwader 2.

                  Hi

I noticed today on the 12 O'Clock High forum that a gent by the name of Matt Starr in the US has a field made RK that was awarded in the POW camp to Wuerfel, I have sent a PM to him for some photos, so hopefully I will get a reply.

Now, another request if I could thanks, does anyone have any photos of Otto Wuerfel, or even of his various aircraft up to when he went down in Russia??
The only photo of him I have seen so far is the one in the Obermaier RK book.

                  Thanks again.

                  Best wishes

                  Bob

                    Wurfel signature

                    Hi,
I have his signature on a piece of paper pasted to the back of the Obermaier photo - loos like it came from an envelope. I have had it since the late 1980s and am confident it is an original. Sorry never seen another photo.
